The Future Should be Now !

22nd April 2010

I know how it is to think of a good title to an article. When I was involved in the Lib Dems I was the Focus editor and was always trying to think of some clever title.

But why oh why is modern architecture still refered to as ‘futuristic’. What is so futuristic about Marks & Spencer’s proposal to revamp it’s Norwich store?

Is it because most of what gets built is ‘traditional’/ neo-Georgian that on the rare occasion something modern is given the go-ahead it’s so different and not of our time (but we’re in the 21st century – arrrrgh !) that it’s seen as ‘futuristic?

It’s no surprise that many films set in the near future are shot in some Corbusien-style concrete development.

Marks & Spencer have a ‘Plan A (because there is no Plan B)’ campaign – ’180 commitments to achieve by 2015, with the ultimate goal of becoming the world’s most sustainable major retailer.’

The Norwich Store re-vamp features a ‘living wall’ made from recycled panels containing plants that will absorb and filter out toxins. The living wall would be watered from rain harvested on the store’s roof.

On a thoroughly un-sustainable trip to IKEA last year the other half photoed this very futuristic M&S lorry.
